“I try so hard to be,
like the others in the pond”
The little Frog says to the Moon,
“The toads are so big and have so much to say,
I don’t know if I’ll ever be that way.
I’ll never fly like the butterflies in spring,
Or dance along the water like the fireflies in the evening,
And I’ll never sing a song as lovely as the birds in the morn,
I just…don’t really like the way I was born”
The Moon looks pained as she casts her light upon the Frog,
He hangs his head low as he hates what he sees in the reflection of his pond.
“What if this is all I am” He asks
“What if this is all I will ever be?”
“Can I ask you a question?” The Moon shifts closer, her light spreading and expanding, touching every flower and blade of grass.
“Yes” the Frogs quiet voice barely a whisper amongst the woods noise
“Do you judge the toads for how loud they are?”
“No of course not”
“Or the fireflies for how small they are?”
“No”
“Or the little birds for not being able to fly as high as an eagle?”
''I don’t understand” The Frog says,
The Moon chuckles at the impatient little guest,
“You want to be like everyone else?” The Moon asks,
“Yes”
“But what if the toads wanted to be as small as you? To be able to find cover easier when the storm rolls through?”
“That’s true, I can fit under any rock!” The Frog perks up.
“Or if the birds longed to dive into the deep, making a little lilypad home where they sleep?”
“My lily pad is the comfiest!” The Frog exclaimed,
“Alas, we are all unique, you cannot be like anyone else, even if that is what you seek” the Moon sings,
“I don’t think I want to be a toad anymore, or a little bird” The Frog starts,
“I like the way I can jump above the grass,
Leaving my marks all along the path,
My croak isn’t the loudest of the bunch,
But it certainly helps when I’m spying on my lunch!
Come to think of it, I like my colours too,
My green skin keeps me safe from all the other kin,
Keeping me hidden in amongst the grass,
Well this is a strange feeling” The Frog gasps.
“What is?” The Moon asks,
“Wanting to be a Frog at last!”
